7/09/09

It's 7/09/09, at least for a few minutes more, and while that date might not be as Trek-significant as I'm sure January 7, 2001 was (and not even quite as good as 7/09/01 would have been), it seems like the perfect occasion to reminisce on Seven of Nine, everyone's favorite catsuit-clad Borg drone. I would have liked to have posted my ramblings on "Scorpion, Part 1" today, but it also happens to be one of my busiest weeks on record, and the only Internet access I have right now is through my phone.

So I'm writing this to get in under the wire of the moderately significant date, and I'm planning on having a little Borg retrospective weekend, but there won't be much from my end until Friday afternoon. So here's the audience participation moment, true believers: What's your favorite Borg moment or episode? Leave your responses in the comments!

I, Borg all the way, especially the scene where Picard confronts Hugh as "Locutus", seeing him switch into that mode was interesting.

Going only by years-old memory, "I, Borg" is far and away my favorite Borg story. Yes, it's a little cliché, but it had fantastic character moments. I think it's a large part of why I like the concept of Seven of Nine.

Favorite story? "I, Borg", for reasons noted above. I loved Star Trek: First Contact, but I thought the Borg were way creepier before they got such an individualistic leader as the Borg Queen.

Favorite moment? Two words: "Assimilate this!"

I'm surprised no one has said Best of Both Worlds yet. Granted, it's the obvious choice, but there's a reason it's that. It's the Borg at their most powerful and terrifying. They'd annihilated the fleet, assimilated Picard, and only a haggard Enterprise with Riker at the helm stood between them and Earth. Tense stuff.

As for "I, Borg" it just wasn't my thing. I don't need my Borg to be cute and cuddly. I know it's Star Trek, and on the whole, they make peace with villains eventually, but the nice thing about the Borg is that they aren't villains in the traditional sense. They're more of a virus, a highly intelligent, dangerous, and adaptable virus that will infect you and make you part of them. Scary for a lot of reasons. A babyfaced Borg who gets scared kind of ruins that, as does a villainous Queen. As does Voyager blowing up dozens of Borg Cubes at once.

You know what? After "Best of Both Worlds" I think they should have just stopped with the Borg altogether.
